You're over complicating the situation.
You have to file your US taxes. However, as you indicate, Spain and the US have a double taxation treaty. The process is very straightforward. You claim a foreign tax credit equal to what you paid in Spain, which will offset your tax due in the US. Also, at no point will I have to give up my US citizenship.
