There's no question it's about individual preference.
I mean there could even be a scenario where it's, objectively, no the right money move to make- in either direction. But you do it, because it's good and feels right for you. Maybe you find a way to save elsewhere.
It's sort of like a public good such as public transportation. Most cities lose or don't make much money off of it. It's a losing proposition economically. However, other benefits exist to make the loss more than palatable.
