I disagree.

First, many of our cities are "walking cities" that had the public transit infrastructure until it was illegally ripped out.

Second, we created suburbia. And, as bad as it is, some form of it exists throughout Europe. Of course, there will always be a need for car trips in urban, suburban and, obviously, rural settings. But we absolutely can do a better job of connecting places to one another and making connections within places.

To say otherwise is simply reflects a lack of foresight and will.
