For the record, I don’t believe in low gas prices. I am against car dependent built environments and lifestyles. Therefore, I am in favor of high gas prices as a deterrent.

That said, some people have no choice (often individuals and households with low income) and others have preferences (who am I to dictate precisely how another person chooses to live?). We should not expect low-income individuals and households to pay the same- at least through the gas tax- to fund transportation initiatives and such. Upper income and wealthy people should pay considerably more than the middle income and low income tiers.
